Development Research Division | South African‐German Centre for Development Research and Criminal Justice

The Development Research Division of the Centre for Development Research and Criminal Justice (CDRCJ) offers generous three year DAAD merit scholarships for PhD students in Development Studies, Governance, Public Policy or Public Management at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town. The closing date for scholarship applications for full-time students to commence their studies in January 2012 already expired. Scholarships for the next intake in 2013 will be advertised in 2012.

Entry requirements:

• Scholarship applicants should have an excellent academic record in any social science, economics, public administration or other management sciences.
• They should have achieved at least an average of 70% (or an upper 2nd class) in previous postgraduate studies at the Masters or equivalent level.
• Relevant professional experience in the public or development sectors will also be an advantage.

The following documents are required:

• A letter of application
• DRD-SA application form (also available for download from the scholarship section)
• A CV
• Your school leaving certificate
• An academic transcript from your last university
• Two academic references.
• Referees should also comment on your ability to study in English.
• A research proposal of your PhD project (Guidelines for writing a research proposal)
• PhD candidates in the fields of Governance, Public Policy, Public Management or Development Studies can submit their scholarship application before they register with UWC through the online application procedure.

Successful applicants will study at the UWC but will also undertake doctoral course work at the IEE, the Institute for Development Research and Development Policy at the Ruhr-University, Bochum in Germany, the academic partner of UWC.
